Gloucester Foreward
by Russell Grant
I love history – all history. I presume that as you read these carefully chosen words means you do to. Thank you for doing so.
I am totally aware that I am in a privileged position to have your eyes and attention even for short amount of time. In this little book I will present to you my personal thoughts of the glories of Gloucester . I will never ever tell you what not to do or where to go, you must have that choice.
I will point out what enthuses me, paint a picture and place before you the facts and information of all that makes Gloucester unique to give you the opportunity to sample a piece of Gloucester heritage and life that tickles your fancy.
In a world bent on globalisation where retail centres, malls and many High Streets are full of the same choice, Hobson's choice, no choice of where to buy, drink or eat, it is history that gives a place its own peculiar brilliance and particular individual appeal. There is only ONE Gloucester Cathedral, thank God, but there are replica brands in a never-ending chain of the same quashing the exclusive charm and character of many beautiful places.
To me a guide is about creating an awareness of what a place has to offer. But far too many of them tell you to bypass this place or that as being “not worth the stop”. Some cast aspersions on attractions or locations that proffer their own wee treasures that ARE worth the time and effort for you to make up your own mind. One person's rubbish could be your treasure.
This is a little book of discovery that lists what is on offer in one of Britain 's greatest cities. I will present to you what pleases me and leave you to seek out what brings you joy or pleasure.
How can anyone person or any one place please all the people all the time? I would say impossible. I hope my love and enthusiasm for places and its past will point you in the right direction to pursue your particular interest, obsession or hobby. It is pretty obvious that if you don't know if something is out there to go and visit then you will miss it! That is what this little guide book is all about, a compass to somewhere evocative and enjoyable that might spark off a brand new interest or trigger a desire for more historical exploration elsewhere.
I am very interested in your Gloucester thoughts whether you're born in here, are resident within its city limits, passing through or a first-time or long term visitor. I am always pleased to hear from you as you have taken the time to delight in this bright city.
For me, appreciating each chapter of a place's story since its origins means we can look forward with anticipation at what is to come, after all since you began reading this book everything you have read so far is now history.
